Sign language - Movies

Had my last class of sign language at Noida Deaf Society yesterday. If only, I could explain how it feels to be able to communicate without using words - how immensely wonderful it is to finally know something I have been dying to learn, how deeply overwhelming it is to be able to understand and share the funny nitty-gritties of life in sign language, how beautiful it is to connect two worlds - hearing and deaf.

Some movies that I have seen related to sign language :

1. Children of lesser God

A highly recommended movie (winner of 5 academy awards) with an actual deaf actress (who also won an Oscar for her performance) playing an estranged deaf student turned sweeper and a hearing speech teacher who wants her, yet also wants her to change certain of her ways. A must watch!

2.  See what I'm saying

A documentary about deaf artists (A comic, a drummer, an actor and a hard-of-hearing singer) struggling to make it in America. A side of life that we might never know.

3. Koshish

Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bahaduri playing a deaf-mute couple in an innocent and beautiful Gulzar creation as early as 1972.

4. Hear Me

A Taiwanese movie about a delivery boy who falls for one of the two hearing impaired sisters. But as the story unfolds, it just gets even more interesting. Also available on youtube.

5. Sound and Fury

A powerful documentary about cochlear implants and American deaf community's take on it. "If you could make your deaf child hear, would you ?" - The answer isn't that obvious, if you actually see the impact. Also recommended - "Sound and Fury - 6 years later"
